KAREN ANTORVEZA

Karen Antorveza is a Colombian biodesigner and researcher based in Zurich. She is currently a doctoral researcher at the Chair of Digital Building Technologies (dbt) at ETH Zurich, working within the ETH’s Advanced Engineering with Living Materials (ALIVE) initiative, where she explores pioneering solutions for future materials at the convergence of design, microbiology, and engineering.

Her work focuses on material innovation through digital fabrication, biotechnology, and computational design. She holds a Master of Science in Integrative Technologies and Architectural Design Research (ITECH) from the University of Stuttgart (2020) and a degree in Industrial Design from UADE, Argentina (2015).

Before her graduate master's studies, Karen co-founded Taller de Materiales y Construcción (TaMaCo) in Buenos Aires, an experimental design and fabrication lab (2015–2018) focused on materials research and digital fabrication. She is also the co-founder of Studio Formosa, a research-led design practice operating across various scales and disciplines. She later worked as a senior computational designer with the R&D team at Caracol AM in Italy.

Karen’s work has been exhibited internationally, including at the Biennale Architettura Venezia 2025 – Arsenale, Milan Design Week, Kunstgewerbemuseum Berlin, Open Design – Makea Tu Vida in Barcelona, the 3D Pioneers Challenge in Germany, and various cultural institutions in Buenos Aires.
