Geological Microbial Formations explores biocementation as a radical approach to transforming construction waste into architectural materials. At the center of the installation, a robotic arm performs a continuous layering process using sand, microbial cultures, and mineral-binding. Each layer is deposited through a two-step spray sequence: a microbial suspension of Sporosarcina pasteurii and a calcium-rich solution that initiates the biocementation reaction. This triggers microbial-induced calcite precipitation MICP — a natural process that binds granulates into stone-like formations under ambient conditions.

Inspired by the slow geological intelligence of stromatolites- mineral structures grown over millennia by microbial communities- the principle is reimagined here as an accelerated and choreographed act by a robotic system which cultivates a living geological formation that grows new links between biology and architecture throughout the Biennale.

Around this active biofabrication core, the installation displays fully formed components and material samples created with different types and sizes of aggregates, from recycled sand and sawdust to coarse rubble and mineral waste streams.&#38;nbsp; These demonstrate the technique’s adaptability and potential to bind a wide range of materials into solid forms, rethinking waste as raw matter for growth.

A companion video reveals the microscopic dynamics behind this transformation- fluorescence and scanning electron microscope footage highlight bacteria motility, crystal formation, and the minute interactions that bind minerals at the grain scale. The installation resists the conventions of static display; it unfolds as a temporal factory— part building site, part microbial lab, part evolving architectural artifact.

TaMaCo (Taller de Materiales y Construcción)is one of the modules of cheLA. The space is dedicated to experimentation in art, design, and architecture. Its equipment comprises traditional design and fabrication tools (woodwork, metalwork, and ceramic) and digital fabrication machines such as 3D printers, a laser cutter, and a CNC mill. The cultural proposal of TaMaCo includes lectures, workshops, and a residence program for national and international artists. Since its outset, TaMaCo has collaborated closely with several cultural and educational institutions, such as UBA (University of Buenos Aires), CCSM (Centro Cultural San Martin), ArteBa, and Fundacion Telefonica. From 2015 to 2018, the project raised about 250 USD in funding through the program "Mecenazgo Cultural" made by the Ministry of Culture of the city of Buenos Aires and received the sponsorship of different companies such as Bosh, Akzo Nobel, and Trotec. 
I collaborated with Francesco Milano to develop the laboratory's brief, research, business planning, organizational development, and strategic management

The digital era brings us the possibility to design complex geometries but the prioritization of form has relegated material properties and environmental impact. The result is heavy machining, excessive manual labor and intricate scaffolding on the construction site.⠀

Therefore, this thesis proposes a design based on intrinsic material properties and material programming to create self-constructing architectural building components. By combining hygroscopic properties of self-shaping wood actuators with the tunability of 3D printing, the functionality of each element can be extended. The resulting components can be fabricated and assembled flat and then dry to self-shape on site into their pre-programmed geometry, which then is locked once the final state is reached. The focus of this research therefore was the development of a custom design to fabrication workflow to achieve this goal. Based on a set of parameters extracted from physical fundamental tests, rules for the pattern design and actuator configuration were established. A finite element behavior simulation tailored to self-shaping hybrids was used to evaluate the success in approximating the intended geometry. From that a digital fabrication workflow was devised and the framework was tested through the production of physical prototypes at small and large scale. The presented research and prototypes show how self-shaping hybrids could be used as an alternative in the fabrication and construction of double curved components, reducing wasteful and laborious processes.

This exercise involved studying a formation process in nature (mycelium growth) and its abstraction, using Python programming to generate a complex geometry. The mycelium is the vegetative part of fungi, which consists of a network of interconnected filamentous cells called hyphae. The logic this structure follows while growing can be outlined in a defined set of rules: it is concentric, directional, branches progressively, and is space-filling. We simulated this behavior through an agent-based algorithm, where a certain amount of particles iteratively move away from a central point, wander in space, and reproduce following precise behavioral instructions. To the trajectory of each particle, volumetric properties were given using a voxelization algorithm which finally converts the system into a three-dimensional object to be materialized through SLS 3D printing.

LivMatS Pavilion

Located in the Botanical Garden of the University of Freiburg, the livMatS Pavilion offers a viable, resource-efficient alternative to conventional construction methods and therefore represents an important step towards sustainability in architecture. It constitutes the first building ever with a load-bearing structure that is entirely made of robotically wound flax fibre, a material that is fully naturally renewable, biodegradable, and regionally available in Central Europe.






The bioinspired pavilion showcases how novel co-design processes that account concurrently for geometrical, material, structural, productional, environmental, and aesthetic requirements, together with advanced robotic fabrication techniques applied to natural materials, are capable to generate a unique architecture that is at the same time ecological and expressive.



The distinctive, intricate surface appearance of the structural flax elements is evocative of both vernacular examples of latticework and biological systems. &#38;nbsp;



Enabled by a novel combination of natural materials and advanced digital technologies, this pavilion stems from the successful collaboration of an interdisciplinary team of architects and engineers of the ITECH master`s program at the Cluster of Excellence “Integrative Computational Design and Construction for Architecture (IntCDC)” at the University of Stuttgart and biologists from the Cluster of Excellence “Living, Adaptive and Energy-autonomous Material Systems (livMatS)” at the University of Freiburg.

2019This concept study for a façade- cladding system aims to explore how a traditional craftsmanship technique, such as ceramic forming, can be expanded with computational design and digital fabrication methods. The core element of the project is a robotic setup, able to shape clay in a behavioral/non-deterministic way. The manufacturing process consists of a feedback loop in which data collected through computer vision iteratively guides the robotic motion in the shaping of the tile. No predetermined toolpath movement is defined in advance, as the resultant holes-pattern on the clay is the product of the sensing loop that guides the robot's behavior under a particular set of rules. The paradigm of a new kind of creativity emerges, where the product's appearance is no longer the direct reflection of the designer's intentions but autonomously generated by the programmed self-consciousness of the tool. The resulting tiles are aesthetically coherent but all unique and unrepeatable.

As a material for use in design, plastic became readily available and widely used in the 1950s. Since then, researchers estimate we have produced over 9 billion tons of plastic; every single bit of this amount is still sitting on our planet. From its origins as a dream material, plastic is perceived now as one of the biggest threats of our times, polluting our water systems and causing havoc for marine life in our ocean. The legacy of plastic tells us about today's urgency to find and promote alternative materials produced from clean sources capable of creating zero impact on the ecosystems during their whole life cycle. At the intersection of biology and materials science, mushrooms are emerging as a promising focus of study. Mycelium, the vegetative part of a fungus, is a renewable, biodegradable, and growing material that eats plant waste and creates strong and durable structures. Mycelium-based composites can be categorized as foams due to their high porosity and slight rigidity. In this project, mycelium has been combined with a cotton fabric mold, in which the material grows and remains integrated into the object at the end of the process. The raw esthetic of the stool is radical, in the same way shiny colors and fluid shapes of the early design experiments with polymers used to be.

2018&#38;nbsp;
 This workshop explored and promoted the creation and use of materials formed from the growth of living organisms. We used the mycelium of the fungus Ganoderma Lucidum to create this biomaterial. This organism has the natural capacity to fuse and transform different typologies of organic substrates. From this theoretical/practical workshop, we explored the material's morphological possibilities, making various molds and techniques using digital manufacturing tools.
 
 Objective: to generate a catalog of pieces that explore the material's possibilities and to build an understanding of form and matter in bio-manufacturing from a personal perspective through collective learning.
